Could somebody explain why this was a misuse of the questions and answers format?

The question is one that cannot be answered with an answer based on facts, no one can know what or why each Republican thinks. The guidelines say---If the answers to your question are facts and data, as opposed to opinions, that is a good question. If you are seeking pure opinion, that is chat.
